Equality or fairness? Is this the same thing? Should everyone be treated equally? I would like to challenge that thinking because everyone's needs are different, so if you treat everyone equally you are not meeting their needs. If we strive for fairness then everyone's needs are met. What do you think?
Possible issues - think about all the different staff in your school, not just the teachers, but all staff. Then think about their different needs. These will fall into 2 categories, work or personal. Work related as their jobs will have specific needs, for instance a site manager has a very different working to a non teaching SLT member. Personal has all you staff will have issues they are dealing with, someone going through the menopause will have different needs to a dad with a new baby at home. Should all these people be treated the same?
How to tackle this - give your staff a voice, listen to it and act on it. Communicate why you are aiming for fairness over equality so staff understand why people are being treated differently.
